You may have never heard this before but probiotics sometimes can cause more harm than good. Our bodies are very complex and need individualized approach a lot of the time.
Let me start off by saying that the risk of harmful effects from probiotics is greater in people with severe illnesses or compromised immune systems. The harmful effects include infections, productions of harmful substances , and transfer of antibiotic resistance genes from probiotic microorganisms. Some probiotics contain microorganisms other than the ones listed on the label.
So if you have a history of SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth), autoimmune disease, chronic infections it would be best for you to consult your health care provider before starting a probiotic. If you and your care team decide it is best for you to start a probiotic, make sure you find a reputable company.
I have a histamine intolerance so it is hard for me to take just any probiotic, I also have a history of SIBO, yeast intolerance, gluten intolerance, and GI inflammation. Most of the lactobacilli produce histamines and provoke reactions but there are some strains that supposedly degrade histamines such as Lactobacillus plantarum, rhamnosus, and salivarius. But again just do your research and talk with your health care provider. I have used Dr Amy Myers supplements for GUT repair and maintenance for myself and for my daughters. She has so many options for GUT solutions. Here is the link. http://amymyersmd.com
